The Wreaths Across America Transportation Team, together with countless volunteers across the nation, take pride in having the finest representatives of our industry contribute to this meaningful mission. United, we achieved the tremendous task of honoring and remembering our nation’s fallen heroes. The dedication by all involved ensured the memories of our veterans live on, their final resting places are adorned with the honor they deserve, and ensured the mission of Wreaths Across America, “Remember the fallen. Honor those who serve. Teach the next generation the value of freedom.” was met with overwhelming success.

Stevens Transport was honored to participate in the Wreaths Across America program this year and is especially grateful for the opportunity to support three missions, delivering to Arlington National Cemetery, the DFW area, and South Carolina. Since our initial involvement in 2017, Stevens Transport has been deeply intertwined with the Wreaths Across America initiative, contributing to their living tribute of fresh evergreens. This tradition represents a living memorial that honors our nation’s fallen heroes, Veterans, active-duty military, and their families. We believe the WAA 2024 Theme: Live with Purpose aligns with our enduring commitment, and we are proud to have had the opportunity once again.

Driver and U.S. Army Veteran, Shane Lassiter, was a part of a convoy from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. On December 13th, Virginia State Police, Arlington County Police, and Fairfax County Police escorted the trucks to Arlington National Cemetery. On National Wreaths Across America Day, Lassiter joined volunteers in placing wreaths. He was able to honor a friend and fallen soldier he served with in Iraq, placing a wreath and saying his name out loud, ensuring his memory lives on. “The event was humbling and very rewarding.”, said Lassiter.

Four drivers supported the DFW area and South Carolina missions, U.S. Army National Guard Captain Mark Joseph, U.S. Army Veteran Justin Collins, Charles Grier, and Patrick Castillo. From the initial loading and delivery to the yard in Dallas by Collins, to the seamless deliveries completed by Grier, Joseph (DFW area), and Castillo (SC). It was a successful collaboration represented by our drivers honoring the Wreaths Across America tradition for our active-duty, Veterans, and deep-rooted military family members.

The support from a dedicated transportation network allowed us to aid in the mission that met unprecedented heights, by helping deliver over 2 million Veterans’ wreaths across the 4,600 participating national cemetery locations nationwide.

We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to collaborate with our partners again. The 2025 National Wreaths Across America Day is set for Saturday, December 13th – let us continue this meaningful journey together!

2024 Stevens Transport Honor Fleet:

Shane Lassiter – Maine to Arlington National Cemetery, representing Stevens Transport in D.C.
Mark Joseph – DFW Load Driver and U.S. Army National Guard Captain
Justin Collins – DFW Load Driver
Charles Grier – DFW Load Driver
Patrick Castillo – DFW Load Driver to South Carolina

Demetrice Reeves’ Prevents Tragedy

Sunday, December 19th, Stevens Transport Driver Trainer Demetrice Reeves was in the passenger seat observing his student when a near tragedy occurred. His student became unresponsive at the wheel and went into seizure-like convulsions on 1-75 in Pompano Beach, FL. Recognizing the imminent danger, Demetrice jumped into action.

He immediately pulled the truck and trailer brakes, unbuckled the student, removed him from the driver’s seat and regained control of the truck all while it was still in motion. Once he regained control of the equipment, he was then able to get the truck safely stopped.

Once stopped, Demetrice called 911 and was able to quickly guide emergency personnel to their location so that his student could receive the medical attention he needed.

Stevens Transport is proud to recognize the outstanding efforts of Demetrice Reeves for his quick action to avert a serious accident and summon emergency responders to aid his fellow driver.

US Army Veteran Larry Maser Is Finalist For 2018 Trucking’s Top Rookie

Stevens Transport is proud to announce that Larry Maser, a retired US Army combat engineer, has been nominated as a finalist for Trucking’s Top Rookie Award.  The award will be announced on Thursday, August 23rd at the Great American Truck Show in Dallas, TX.

Larry grew up in the Sacramento area, playing sports all through school.  He developed his interest in trucking from his father, who was an over-the-road driver and loved to share stories about the places he visited.  “I remember hearing his stories and seeing all the trucks on the road.  I think I wanted to do this from a pretty early age”.

After retiring from the US military, Larry began his driving career by going through the Stevens Driving Academy and said he enjoyed the entire training program.  “There’s a lot to learn, but the support you get from Stevens Transport is second to none”.  He credits a lot of his early success to his trainer Michael Noak.  “It was a great fit for me, and he taught me an awful lot”.

When asked about his first year on the road, he said, “Driving for Stevens has been a lot of fun. I love traveling and I’ve seen a Red Sox game at Fenway Park and visited the Nascar Hall of Fame in Charlotte. I feel like I’m learning something every day about being a truck driver”.

Larry and his wife Lynn have four children, Cacey (daughter) and sons Cameron, Derik and Keil. As for the award, Larry is just honored to be recognized for his accomplishments and wants to thank Melody Bronson in particular. “Melody has been remarkable. I never dreamed this would happen, and I appreciate everything she has done for me and my family”.

Recognizing the top rookie driver was the idea of the late Mike O’Connell, who was formerly the executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Training Association. He believed that honoring a top rookie driver helped show new drivers they are appreciated by the trucking industry.

Stevens driver, Robert Shirley, helps rescue a man from a burning car.

Robert had just picked up a load out of Springfield, Missouri for Kraft when he noticed a minivan driving erratically. When he saw the van hit the containment wall and catch fire, his wife, Julie, immediately called 911. Robert was able to safely stop his truck, run to the vehicle, and put out the fire that was under the car. Robert didn’t want to become a sitting duck on the highway, so after giving the 911 dispatch the details, they were able to get back on the road to deliver their load.

“Wrecks happen quickly on the road. I’m thankful Stevens takes safety seriously and trains drivers thoroughly.” Says Robert. He is definitely glad Stevens provided a new quality fire extinguisher for his truck. His suggestion to newer drivers is to listen to experienced drivers. They have knowledge that can save your life as well as those around you. His favorite saying is, “Take pride or don’t ride.”

Robert was a United States Merchant Mariner before driving for Stevens. He received extensive fire training and was thankful it was useful at a critical time. He feels that if you can safely stop your truck to assist someone in need, do so. But, be sure stopping doesn’t endanger yourself, your truck, or anyone else on the road. He also suggests making sure the truck does not impede traffic flow.

Robert has been with Stevens for four years. After being tired of spending considerable time on the ocean, he decided to get his CDL Training at TDI in Florida. While attending TDI, Robert saw a poster that had the kind of information he needed in order to make an informed decision about who he wanted to drive for.  He was very impressed with the Stevens trucks. A former student, who now drives for Stevens, stopped by the school to show off his beautiful new Stevens truck.

He appreciates how Stevens has very knowledgeable employees who care about people and equipment. “It’s impressive how much Stevens cares about safety,” Says Robert. He feels that Stevens is here to help drivers be safe, take pride in what they do and be a family of people who provide an important service to the public.

Robert is married with a daughter and a dog whom he considers his son. Robert thanks Stevens for giving him the chance to have a rewarding career for a company that considers him family and not just a number. He is here for the long haul!

Stevens Driver Reported Crash & Provided Aid

The Truckload Carrier Association (TCA) has named Mike Noack a Highway Angel for his heroic act of bravery and service on July 27th, 2022. Mike is an owner operator with several trucks and has been driving with Stevens Transport for almost ten years.

In the very early morning of Wednesday, July 27th, Mike (from Greenville, TX) was driving on I-10 in Port Allen, Louisiana when the tanker truck in front of him crashed into a ditch. Mike immediately pulled over, called 911 to alert the authorities, and then went to the truck to see if could help.

“His windshield was blown off for the most part,” said Noack. “The driver was pretty much pinned behind the dashboard, and he had a gaping gash to his head, and his arm had completely snapped at the elbow.”

Due to the position of the truck cab, driver, and extent of the driver’s injuries, Mike was unable to pull him out of the vehicle. Instead, he waited alongside the driver to keep him calm until emergency personnel arrived. “I just stayed with him and reassured him that everything would be alright,” he added. “I hope that if that were ever to happen to me, somebody would do the same.”

Since the program’s inception in 1997, nearly 1300 professional truck drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for exemplary kindness, courtesy and courage displayed while on the job. Mike Noack joins Royford Burris in being honored as Highway Angels this year.

On Thursday, September 1st, the Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award program announced the top 11 semi-finalists in running for the ultimate prize of a fully loaded Kenworth T680 Next Generation truck. Launched in 2016 as part of an overall plan to help promote careers in the transportation industry to transitioning military Veterans, National Guard members and Reservists, the annual award has gained national recognition with a record number of fleets and driver training schools making nominations this year. This year’s group of nominees was the largest and most diverse in the seven-year history of the Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence Award. Stevens Transport is proud to have nominated a top three finalist five of the last six years. We are honored to have a Stevens Transport Veteran/Driver be named the grand prize winner in both 2017 and 2021!

A Georgia native, Paul Gouker answered the call to serve our country at 18 years old in 1992. Paul enlisted and served our country for eight years in the National Guard before transitioning to active duty in the year 2000. While on active duty, Paul deployed multiple times in support of the War on Terrorism to various locations including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Bosnia. As a Cavalry Scout, Paul’s primary mission was to conduct Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, and when necessary, close with and destroy the enemy. Paul is married with four children. Two of his children currently serve in the military. Paul attended the Georgia Driving Academy to earn his Class A CDL.

Adding to the prestige of this award, the Top 11 will be recognized throughout the month of September, and each will be attending a special welcome event at the National Veterans Memorial in Columbus, OH on Thursday, September 22nd. On September 23rd, the finalists will tour the Kenworth manufacturing facility in Chillicothe, OH, and the Top 3 Finalists will be announced at the MHC RoadReady Center.

Stevens Transport is honored to have Paul Gouker as a valued member of our driving corps and to represent Stevens Transport as a Finalist for this great award. Thank you, Paul, for proudly serving our country for nearly three decades!
